The Camp
Home

The base camp was in Moran State Park, at the Environmental Learning Center.  Cabins were available to participants although some elected to camp.  A number of forms of recreation were available such as a pickup basketball game, enjoying the outdoors, or hanging out (what the younger set did).

The cafeteria was also a popular place to be where folks could discuss the day's Chow-Line-2.JPG (91484 bytes)trip and figure out where to go the next day.

Some more shots from the camp are below:

The Shetler Boys

No description of the MCC Ride the San Juans would be complete without mentioning the Shetler Boys.  This set of 3 brothers and a cousin came from Scotts Mills, OR.  They were quiet, reserved, unassuming types.  That is, until they got on their bikes.  Their ages ranged from 18 to 15 with the older ones taking care of the youngest.  These guys knew how to use a draft line that allowed them to keep a Shetler-Boys-and-the-people-they-just-passed.JPG (68581 bytes)strong pace.   Among the more accomplished riders of the group it became a challenge to try and beat the Shetler boys.  Here's a picture of them just passing some slower moving bicycles. Shetler-Boys&david-searles.JPG (75730 bytes) On one of the rare instances where we actually caught up to them I managed to get them to pose.

Not only could these guys ride bike, they had some other skills as well.  On Thursday night we had a talent show.  Among the acts was a singing quartet called the Shetler Brothers-Live in the San Juans.  Read a review of this awesome group.
